Second Step to a Sustainable Wardrobe

Part 2 – Style R&D

This oft-over looked step is more important now than ever. Let’s review the method of “FIVE” by @downsizeupgrade from First Step to a Sustainable Wardrobe and I like to add an S.

To build a truly sustainable wardrobe, one must skip the fast fashion. I went looking for some education and stumbled upon YouTuber Laura VonV. She does an amazing series on how to find quality clothing at some of our favorite stores. I learned a TON watching her and you will, too.

I’m big on sustainability and understanding the lifecycle of a clothing garment. Learning about quality and longevity is a huge part of my fashion adventure.

Once I felt empowered to identify a quality, long-lasting garment the question was what to buy?

Think back, is there an item that you re-buy again and again? Maybe you noticed 5 pairs of black leggings or 4 plum colored shirts in your wardrobe that you parted with in Step 1? Multiples is the sign of a wardrobe staple. Identify your staples – these are items to research (or crowdsource!). Find the perfect, quality version and snap it up!

Find a fashion content maker with your body type. Draft off of their reviews and recommendations. Instagram/TikTok are vast and believe me, there is someone out there for everyone’s body type and sense of style.

  • Do be willing to spend a bit more than you normally would.
  • Do branch out to brands that are new to you AND revisit favorite brands you have long relied on.
  • Do Google detailed items, “The perfect plum colored, short sleeved cotton top”. Dig in with your new knowledge of quality products and check out the material and scope out the details.
  • Don’t read the 5 star reviews. Read the 3 stars reviews.
  • Don’t be afraid to return an item that is not right.
  • Don’t forget to put your confidence on first when sporting your sustainable wardrobe!

If you need a hand getting real with your wardrobe, call me. I offer encouraging and nonjudgemental support to get you to your next chapter.
