First Step to a Sustainable Wardrobe

Part 1 – The Cull

In a way, I was lucky. After 9 years of living in my adopted country, I was moving “home” (Hi, Oak Park!) with my son and our Turkish cat. In an effort to keep baggage expenses down (and make room for my rugs, duh), I was whittling our lives down to only the *very necessary*.

I had to take a long hard look at my wardrobe for the first time since I had had a child 7 years prior…What actually *is* all of this stuff? A nonexhaustive list, below.

Goodbye, vintage Adidas zip dress. You were a real one!
  • Vintage clothes I was attached to but did not wear. Related to …
  • Nostalgic clothes that I love(d) but do not wear anymore (including lots of pre-kid clothes from the last days of freedom lol).
  • Clothes that do not fit.
  • Poorly made clothes (fast fashion).
  • Several dresses, worn once.
  • Beautiful warm sweaters that I don’t wear because I am a hot person.
  • Lots of denim I bought in search of the perfect pair of jeans.

I turned to the internet for some tips and found this article that laid out the method of “FIVE” by Abigail from @downsizeupgrade

Expresses My Sense of Style

I ruthlessly applied 5s to everythign in my closet and sold, donated and gave away almost everything I owned, literally. What remained did not seem like the ideal wardrobe to begin the next chapter of my life with…but, almost 2 years later, I miss and regret nothing!

This experiecne was a gift! I wish it for everyone (but not the stressful life circumstances that brought me there). If you need a hand getting real with your wardrobe, call me. I offer encouraging and nonjudgemental support to get you to your next chapter.
